The electrolyte is the medium that carries ions between the anode and cathode inside a battery while blocking electron flow, which is instead routed through the external circuit. In conventional lithium-ion cells the electrolyte is a liquid lithium-salt solution in organic solvents, whereas solid-state designs replace it with a solid conductor to improve safety and energy density. Electrolyte composition affects battery safety classification and the hazardous-substance information relevant under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.
