A waste battery, under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, is a battery that is waste within the meaning of the Waste Framework Directive — that is, discarded or intended or required to be discarded. The point at which a battery becomes waste triggers the collection, treatment, recycling, and producer-responsibility obligations of the Regulation, and is distinct from a battery that is being repaired, repurposed, or prepared for reuse. Waste batteries must be separately collected and may not be discarded with mixed municipal waste.
