Due diligence

Last updated 1 June 2026

Battery due diligence under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 is the obligation on economic operators that place batteries on the market to identify, prevent, and address actual and potential social and environmental risks linked to the sourcing, processing, and trading of raw materials used in batteries — in particular cobalt, natural graphite, lithium, and nickel. Operators must adopt a due diligence policy aligned with recognised international instruments, verify it through third parties, and report on it. The obligation applies above the turnover threshold and subject to the exemptions set in the Regulation, and a summary of the due diligence report is part of the public passport information.
