Nickel manganese cobalt (NMC)

Last updated 1 June 2026

Nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) is a family of lithium-ion cathode chemistries combining those three metals in varying ratios, valued for high energy density and widely used in electric vehicle batteries. Its cobalt and nickel content places NMC batteries squarely within the due-diligence, recycled-content, and material-recovery obligations of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. Higher-nickel NMC variants increase energy density while reducing cobalt, trading off some thermal stability.
