Nickel

Last updated 1 June 2026

Nickel is a key cathode metal in high-energy lithium-ion chemistries such as NMC, where higher nickel content raises energy density. It is one of the four raw materials covered by the due-diligence obligations of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 and is subject to recycled-content and material-recovery requirements. Nickel sourcing carries environmental concerns, particularly around mining and refining, which the Regulation’s due-diligence policy is designed to address.
