Lithium is the active alkali metal at the heart of lithium-ion chemistry, shuttling between anode and cathode to store and release energy. It is one of the raw materials named in the due-diligence obligations of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 and is subject to recycled-content and end-of-life material-recovery targets, with a lithium recovery target phasing in under the Regulation. Securing sustainable lithium supply is a central concern of EU battery and critical-raw-materials policy.
