Second life describes the use of a battery — most often an EV battery — in a new application after it is no longer suitable for its original purpose, for example reusing former EV modules in stationary energy storage. It is enabled by repurposing and depends on reliable state-of-health data so operators can assess whether a battery is fit for reuse. Second-life operators are among the parties with a legitimate interest in detailed battery passport data, which they need to evaluate and document the battery before reuse.
