Importer obligations for the battery passport

An importer that places batteries on the EU market is the responsible economic operator for the battery passport — even when the cells are manufactured outside the EU — and must ensure a compliant per-battery passport exists from 18 February 2027.

Last updated 1 June 2026

A common misconception is that the passport is the cell manufacturer’s problem. For batteries imported into the EU, the obligation falls on the importer placing them on the market. If your supplier abroad does not provide compliant passport data, you still carry the obligation.

  • Ensure each imported battery has a compliant passport with a unique identifier.
  • Obtain the underlying data (carbon footprint, recycled content, due diligence) from your supplier — contractually if needed.
  • Apply the QR code / data carrier and keep the passport live for the retention period.
