SLI battery (starting, lighting, ignition)

Last updated 1 June 2026

An SLI battery, as defined in Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, is a battery designed to supply electric power for the starting, lighting, or ignition of vehicles — the classic automotive starter battery, typically lead-acid. SLI batteries are a distinct category from EV, LMT, industrial, and portable batteries and are subject to recycled-content documentation requirements where they contain cobalt, lithium, nickel, or lead. They are not within the scope of the Article 77 battery passport obligation, which from 18 February 2027 covers only LMT, industrial (above 2 kWh), and EV batteries.
